Storm over SA mercenaries in Libya

Ex-soldiers and police officers recruited in Cape Town helped some of Gadaffi’s family escape to Algeria but another team was less successful

Two teams of South African mercenaries are believed to have helped members of the Gadaffi family to escape from Libya and may have tried to save the late Libyan leader, Moammar el Gadaffi, himself, intelligence and diplomatic sources in Johannesburg told Africa Confidential. The government denies the missions had official sanction but the families of the mercenaries still in Libya say they had a ‘nod and a wink’, if not more. The controversy is providing ample ammunition for President Jacob Zuma’s enemies in a domestic political arena that is rapidly heating up (see Feature).
