Turning the oil taps on and off again

Khartoum's latest threat to shut down South Sudan's oil pipeline may look like political retaliation against the Juba government but it was prompted by a growing internal crisis in Sudan

Just as oil had just started to flow again from South Sudan to Sudan, after months of negotiations and external pressure, Sudan's President Omer Hassan Ahmed el Beshir ordered the closing of the pipeline again on 8 June. A furious Omer denounced the Juba government for continuing to support Sudanese rebels in South Kordofan, Darfur and Blue Nile. Juba has formally given Khartoum assurances (which the African Union has accepted) that it gives no support to the Sudan Revolutionary Front and therefore asks Khartoum to supply evidence, which it has failed to do.
