The political stakes on YouTube

The political issues in dispute are substantial, as can be seen from the leading dissidents who organised a press conference on 6 December in Juba. The conference, which can be seen on YouTube but went largely unnoticed abroad because Nelson Mandela had died on the previous day*. The dissidents’ discontent was fuelled by President Salva Kiir Mayardit sacking his entire government in late July (AC Vol 54 No 17). Several of those dismissed, all Sudan People’s Liberation Movement veterans and mainly SPLM founding members in 1983, are among the eleven people gaoled and accused of plotting a coup. Whatever their plans, old colleagues say they do not believe they planned the violence.
