The voting business

KANU is set to win this month's elections but at a high cost to the economy

Opposition hopes for the 29 December election rest on their ability to force President Daniel arap Moi to a second round of voting for the Presidency. To do this, as well as winning the most votes, the opposition would have to deny him the 25 per cent of votes in five out of the seven provinces that he needs. In the event of such an outcome, they hope the opposition vote would coalesce behind their strongest candidate. The chances of that happening are slim, mainly because the continuing divisions in the opposition have weakened it is as a national force. Far more probable is an even bigger victory for Moi and his Kenya African National Union than the 1992 result, although he is still likely to achieve this on a minority vote because the opposition vote is so disbursed.
