Bongo's beanfeast

It was an achievement, of a kind, that the first- ever European Union Afro-Caribbean Pacific Group summit meeting was held at all. Gabon's President Omar Bongo had invited to Libreville the heads of government of the EU and of the ACP states which are their partners in the Lomé convention. Between the invitations and the due date, on 6 and 7 November, Denis Sassou- Nguesso's cobra militiamen had passed through Libreville on their way to Congo-Brazzaville, and Pascal Lissouba's soldiers had threatened Gabon with revenge. There were armoured cars on street corners, and vigilant security men watched over by Loulou Martin, a French security man. Peace prevailed.
