Chad

Target Gadaffi

The United States and Israel have constructed a series of bases in Chad, Cameroon and elsewhere in which they are training a substantial Contra force of Libyans, including up to 2,000 prisoners-of-war taken by the Chadian army in 1987 (AC Vol 29 No 9). The aim is to overthrow Colonel Moammer Gadaffi. The operation is well advanced and is already putting pressure on Libyan and pro-Tripoli groups operating out of Sudan's lawless western region of Darfur (AC Vol 29 No 11). Several central African countries, but Chad above all, are keen to take revenge for years of Libyan interference in their affairs. Cameroon's role stems from its status as Israel's main base in the region.
