Sudan's Islamist regime: key dates

Islamism is a 20th century ideology but one idealising the borderless caliphates of the seventh century. The movement began in 1928 when Hassan el Banna (22) founded the Muslim Brotherhood (Al Ikhwan al Muslimoon) in Egypt. In 1946, the MB sent two Sudanese students to Khartoum and one, El Sadig Abdullah Abdel Majid, founded Sudan's MB in 1954, whIch he led until 2012. The Islamic Charter Front broke away in 1965 with Hassan Abdullah el Turabi as Secretary General. He used Communist tactics of setting up parallel groups to counter state security and the MB remained influential in the background. Under the late President Ja'afar Mohamed Nimeiri (1969-85) the Islamists went underground until 1977.
