A moral victory

A US judge finds Sudan and Iran guilty of the 1998 US embassy bombings, revealing new details of their involvement

Sixteen years after the bombings of the United States' embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, which killed 224 people and injured more than 1,000, a New York court has ordered Iran and Sudan to pay over US$8 billion in damages to 570 survivors and relatives of those who died. Although neither government is likely to pay up voluntarily, the victims' lawyers hope to secure some money, perhaps from frozen accounts once controlled by Khartoum and Tehran, to make this more than a moral victory.
