The defenestration of Mujuru

The campaign against the Vice-President comes from the top but it leaves the succession issue no clearer than before

Although Joice Mujuru is still nominally the country's only Vice-President as well as Second Secretary of the governing Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front, she is under unremitting pressure to resign both positions before the party's National Congress which begins on 1 December. However, a defeat for the Mujuru faction does not of itself guarantee victory for her rival, Justice Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa. Sensing President Robert Mugabe's predilection for and ability to spring surprises, other hopefuls have begun to pop up.
