Talking politics and doing business, Malaysians are winning new friends

Leave aside the posturing and wishful thinking on both sides, Asia is getting more interested in Africa. Part of it is political and diplomatic: aspiring United Nations Security Council members such as Japan and India want support from Africa's 53 states. Part is economic: China-Africa trade increased by 56 per cent to US$3,900 million in 1995 (United States-Africa trade went up by 12 per cent, to $18,000 mn.). And part is ideological: a marketconscious revival of South-South cooperation – and a chance for Asian states to show that their economic strategies can work better in Africa than Western neo-liberal policies.
