El Sisi consolidates

The President will try to firm up his power through the election of a compliant Parliament and a probable economic upturn

The much delayed parliamentary elections are likely to go ahead during February and March, over three rounds, although the timetable could slip further. The single-chamber Parliament will have 540 elected seats; 420 for individual candidates in specific constituencies and 120 for lists drawn up by parties or individuals. President Abdel Fatah Khalil el Sisi will appoint a further 27 members. The basic election law was issued shortly before he took office in June 2014 but the process has been held up by the need to redraw the electoral map to comply with the new constitution's requirement of fair representation.
