Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan announced on 1 January that his administration would revoke an annual US$6.8bn government fuel subsidy relied upon by many Nigerians to afford petrol. The average price of 1 litre of gasoline subsequently rose from 65 to 141 naira and nationwide protests erupted.
