The face to face meetings between Polisario and Moroccan officials in September and October, the first for almost a decade, offer at least a fig leaf for the continuation of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (Minurso) until 31 May 1997. The Security Council is likely to support the extension in a vote later this month. And the prospect of a return to war has receded (AC Vol 37 No 10).
