Rolling with the punches

Vice-President Arkaah's claim that President Rawlings beat him up helps the opposition

Whatever happened at the 28 December Cabinet meeting at State House, it is helping the opposition's campaign for this year's elections. According to President Jerry Rawlings' supporters, his Vice President, Kow Nkensen Arkaah, was escorted out of the Cabinet room peacefully after an altercation. According to 68-year old Arkaah, he was beaten and kicked by the President, a muscular 49-year old. The opposition is making the most of the incident and Arkaah's claims: for a man – even a chief – to beat an older man is a cultural anathema in Ghana.
