Taking the stand

The long–awaited trial of 19 defendants on charges including abuse of public office, embezzlement and money laundering related to the US$2 billion hidden loans scandal has finally begun. Some, including the elder son of former President Armando Guebuza, Ndambi, have been in prison without bail since February 2019. The trial, being held in Maputo's maximum security prison because it has more space to accommodate the large number of participants and observers, is scheduled to last until mid-October. Witnesses called by attorney general, Beatriz Buchili include former Central Bank Governor Ernesto Gove, Finance Minister Adriano Maleiane and Guebuza himself.?
