Kaunda's detention has sharpened Chiluba's battle with oppositionists and donors

Africa’s only constitutional ‘Christian Nation’ was shaken by the events of 25 December, when ex-President Kenneth Kaunda, once called the nation’s saviour, was arrested and detained. The shock was all the greater since the current President, Frederick Chiluba, had promised that KK would not be touched. Chiluba gave the assurance on 3 December to Washington’s Democracy Envoy, the Reverend Jesse Jackson; and Chiluba’s ministers were saying the same on 22 December when Kaunda arrived home after two months abroad.
