The award of the ZISCO deal to India’s Essar is only one sign that Chinese companies are losing traction in the government of national unity

Chinese companies are finding life in Zimbabwe more difficult under the national unity government, according to United States diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks. Ambassador to Zimbabwe Xin Shunkang told US Ambassador Charles A. Ray about the frustrations experienced by Chinese companies in their dealings with the Zimbabwe authorities, according to the cable. President Robert Mugabe’s Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front has had to work in coalition with the opposition Movement for Democratic Change since 2009 and Ambassador Xin felt that the situation had deteriorated and that the ZANU-PF government was simply not pulling together.
