Museveni swept to victory everywhere except in the north, where fighting continues
President Yoweri Museveni's victory may have given him over 74.2 per cent of the vote but it has not given him what many thought he needed most: a strong showing in the north. All across southern Uganda, he campaigned in freedom, mingling with crowds just like any democrat. However, in the northern provinces, up to 10,000 extra soldiers were drafted in, on top of the 20,000-odd already stationed there. Two separate northern insurgencies are under way; in both the regions affected, Museveni lost by a wide margin.
