Alarms sound on debt, inflation and food

International financial institutions warn that economic dislocation from Moscow's war on Ukraine could trigger social upheaval on the continent

Senior officials in the UN and other international agencies have been ratcheting up their analyses of the damage to Africa's economies following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Ahunna Eziakonwa, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Director of the UN Development Programme's Regional Bureau for Africa, told Africa Confidential that many states are facing 'a Catch-22 situation' as the war in Europe is driving up both the cost of imported food and the cost of growing it locally.
