Brussels refuses to delay deforestation law, hitting Africa's cocoa and coffee farmers

New EU rules banning produce sourced from deforested areas start in January and risk wrecking Ethiopia's coffee trade

Pressure is mounting on the European Commission to postpone the start-up of its tough rules blocking products sourced from deforested areas, including cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soya, wood, and printed paper. Complying with the new law will be costly and laborious for smallholder farmers. Some may try to switch exports to markets outside the EU.
