The gloves are off in the fight for the African National Congress presidential nomination

Formally, the race to lead the African National Congress starts in October and its presidential candidate will be elected by a national conference in December. Yet the leading contenders are already running. The sacked Vice-President Jacob Zuma and the tycoon Tokyo Sexwale run openly. Others campaign through proxies or lobby groups known as ‘networks’. Non-political institutions are exploited; Zuma, understandably keen to assert his moral credentials, had himself made a pastor by the Full Gospel Church.
