A rough beginning

The election campaign is under way and the battle is on for votes in the north

In northern Ghana, the campaign got off to a violent start when Mahamudu Bawumia, vice-presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party for the elections on 7 December, arrived in Dagbon on 31 August. The police failed to ensure adequate security, while the NPP and its main opponent, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), had stoked political tensions, breaking electoral laws and the Electoral Commission’s code of conduct.
