Biya and the Bishops

President Paul Biya saw Pope Francis on 18 October to re-affirm, Biya’s officials said, ‘the longstanding perfect communion between Yaoundé and Rome’. Yet harmony between the various Christian denominations in Cameroon, and between Rome and its local bishop, has been distinctly absent. Cameroon has a special place in Vatican affections with Pope John Paul II visiting twice, and Pope Benedict XVI coming in 2009.
