Clamping down on Katumbi

No less predictable than Moïse Katumbi's long-expected announcement on 4 May that he will run for president was the government's response. That same morning, Justice Minister Alexis Thambwe Mwamba launched an enquiry into allegations by a pro-regime television channel that Katumbi had employed foreign mercenaries to recruit young Congolese to a militia. The security forces arrested members of Katumbi's security detail and appears intent on branding them soldiers of fortune. Efforts to suffocate Katumbi's campaign had been stepped up before he announced his candidacy. Human Rights Watch said at least 27 of his associates and members of opposition parties which back him have been arrested since late April.
