ANC pushes for elections

We hear that President Cyril Ramaphosa wants to bring forward the national and provincial elections to capitalise on the popularity of the country's case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. The case has won plaudits in the global south, leading some to compare the current mood with the liberation aura surrounding Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress (ANC). Yet South African public opinion is notoriously fickle. The jubilation surrounding the victory of the Springboks in the Rugby World Cup wore off within a few weeks. The same could happen to the ICJ case and the surprising 2-0 victory of South Africa's national football team over Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations.
