Elections and wars consume cash

Kenya's William Ruto has hosted a pledging summit for the World Bank but experts predict more demands on a smaller funding pot

Hopeful promises emerging from the Kenya-hosted summit for the International Development Association, the World Bank's soft loan affiliate, on 29-30 April have to be set against wider cuts in aid flows from richer economies. The US$120 billion targeted by President William Ruto for the IDA would be a $27bn boost compared to the last replenishment of the fund in 2021. But pledges to the IDA have been falling over the past decade.
